Joseph Simon family papers, 1882-1944.

Papers of Joseph Simon largely consist of tax, real estate, and financial documents related to Simon's jewelry business and properties that he owned in Baton Rouge. They include tax receipts for the payment of state and local taxes, income tax returns and tax assessments, fire insurance policies for rental properties, applications for homestead exemption, receipts for purchases of building supplies, and store merchandise inventories for J. Simon & Son. Other papers include receipts for payments of membership dues in the Abraham Geiger Lodge of B'nai B'rith in Baton Rouge and various correspondence related to Simon's participation in Congregation B'nai Israel and its efforts recruit newly arriving Jewish families in the city. Also found among the papers are booklets of postcards, hotel receipts, and tourist materials collected during a trip to France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy in the early 1930s. Greeting cards, pictures of family members, and Zionist pamphlets are also included. The papers also include Passover and Seder liturgy guides, a scrapbook containing materials associated with Louisiana veterans of the Spanish-American War, volumes on various topics in Jewish history, a Union prayer book of Jewish worship, a group of small memo books and notebooks containing financial and business-related notations, and several cashbooks and journals that record financial transactions at J. Simon & Son.
